Drugs can be defined as dangerous mood-altering and dependence-forming substances. Their effects vary, depending on how they are used and who takes them. To help you spot evidence of their use, we've listed some of the most popular drugs in SA and signs to look for:

Alcohol
Taken orally. Causes mental disorientation, lack of alertness, damage to organs such as liver, kidneys, etc. Also in severe cases black-outs, convulsions, death.

Amphetamines (Speed)
Commonly a white or brown powder, also in pill or capsule form. Usually sniffed or injected. Makes people lively, giggly and over alert. Depression and difficulty with sleep can follow. Heavy use can produce feelings of persecution.

Dagga (Cannabis, Dope, Marijuana, Weed) Leafy green material (resembles dried parsley). Smoked in reefer or pipe, sometimes with tobacco. Distinctive "herbal" small. Users ay appear "drunk" or talkative. Can lead to dependence. |
Mandrax Mostly light gray or white tablet. Depressant drug normally crushed mixed with dagga and smoked - the so-called white pipe. |

Cocaine (Coke, Crack, Rocks) A white powder commonly sniffed, can also be injected. Often smoked in "rock" form (hard light-gray crystalline "rock"). Similar effects to amphetamines, but more likely to lead to dependence.

Heroine (H, Thai, Nyope) White speckled brown powder. Heated on silver foil and fumes inhaled, also sniffed or injected. Produces alertness, followed by drowsiness and "drunken" appearance. Abstinence in a regular user can result in physical withdrawal symptoms. |

LSD (Acid) Tiny coloured tablets. Micro spots on blotting paper. Small impregnated stamps. Taken by mouth. Can produce severe confusion and ideas of persecution. The use of LSD causes hallucinations. |
ETEcstacy (MDMA, E's, White Dove) Capsule or tablet. Commonly used at "Rave parties". It is a hallucinogenic stimulant. Feelings range from euphoria to anxiety, paranoia and confusion. Can also cause dehydration and diminished co-ordination. |
